If you’ve ever had the privilege of visiting the South Carolina Lowcountry, you know how important golf is to our region. In fact, the sport has been a favorite pastime here since the 1960s! Bluffton and Hilton Head Island are two of the best places to enjoy some tee time! Below, we’ve listed just a few of our favorite public Hilton Head golf courses. 3 of the Best Public Hilton Head Golf Courses
Once you’ve mastered the many Bluffton golf courses, it’s time to head a few miles east to Hilton Head Island! Here, you’ll discover more than 24 championship courses designed by renowned architects like Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus, and Pete Dye. Whether you’re an advanced golfer or have never stepped foot on a fairway, you’ll love the oceanfront views and fun challenges Hilton Head courses offer. Here are a few of the best!
Harbour Town Golf Links
Made famous by the RBC Heritage and iconic Harbour Town Lighthouse, this exceptional public course helped put Hilton Head Island on the map! This renowned Pete Dye course features a beautiful, challenging layout and memorable 18th hole. Be sure to snap a photo of the shimmering Calibogue Sound before wrapping up your game!
The Robert Trent Jones Course in Palmetto Dunes
Courses designed by architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. are known for beautiful craftsmanship, challenging terrain, and expansive greens. His namesake course in Palmetto Dunes is no different! It’s one of three Palmetto Dunes courses and features subtle elevation changes and breezy fairways that create a unique game each time. The other two Palmetto Dunes courses are designed by Arthur Hills and George Fazio—be sure to check them out as well!
Planter’s Row in Port Royal
As one of three renowned courses in the Port Royal community, Planter’s Row offers an exciting challenge for even experienced golfers. Unlike its sister courses in Port Royal, Planter’s Row is a relatively narrow, tree-lined course that requires carry over water (at the par-3 fourth hole). Golfing this William C. Byrd-designed masterpiece is a great way to spend an afternoon on beautiful Hilton Head Island!
While there are plenty of places to stay on Hilton Head, the best local advice we can give is to avoid the island crowds and book a stay at Old Town Bluffton Inn! Find this brand new, luxurious bed and breakfast in the heart of The Promenade in Bluffton’s Historic District. This spot is just off the beaten path, yet close to everything the Lowcountry has to offer! Our boutique accommodations are located just 25 minutes from Hilton Head, 30 minutes from Savannah, 45 minutes from Beaufort, and less than two hours from Charleston. Enjoy your luxe room and premium amenities, then wander Old Town Bluffton to discover charming shops, popular restaurants, and the ever-gorgeous May River. There’s no better accompaniment to your top-notch golf getaway!
