One of the best parts about visiting the Lowcountry is enjoying the rich, soulful flavors of Southern cuisine. There are countless places to satisfy your hunger during a visit, and the Old Oyster Factory on Hilton Head Island is one of our favorites! Not to be confused with nearby Bluffton’s (equally amazing) Bluffton Oyster Company, this spot has been serving up scrumptious shellfish for generations. Read on to learn all about it! Then, be sure to check out our free Vacation Guide for more local recommendations.
A Visitor’s Guide to Visiting the Old Oyster Factory
Once a Cannery, Now a Restaurant
If you’re familiar with Hilton Head Island, you probably know that it used to be—and remains—an important hub for producing Southeastern seafood. Before tourism was as big of a draw to this South Carolina sea island, seafood factories brought funds and recognition to the area. The Old Oyster Factory was one of those factories! Between 1925 and the 1990s, nearby wetlands were harvested and brought back to what was then the Broad Creek Oyster Factory. The oysters were canned by hand, then shipped all across the Lowcountry. Today, that same concrete building lies beneath the factory’s large, modern restaurant!
What You Need to Know Before You Visit
If you’re torn between a few different Hilton Head Restaurants, know that this one is a solid choice! It has been one of the island’s top-rated fine dining experiences for 25 years. In addition, it has earned a spot on OpenTable’s “Top 100 Scenic View Restaurants” list. Dinner is served every day at 4:45 p.m.—you don’t want to miss out! If you’re wondering what to order, we recommend trying the “Oyster Savannah,” “Broad River Blades” on the half-shell, or the “Seafood Medley!” If you’re just along for the ride and seafood isn’t your thing, try a signature salad or steakhouse selection.
