Your Guide to the May River Sandbar
What Is the May River Sandbar?
What locals call “The Sandbar” is a Bluffton secret treasured by those who know about it. This tiny island in the middle of the beautiful and historic May River only appears at low tide and is only accessible by boat (or other aquatic vessel). The Sandbar is a place where friends and family go to unwind and simply enjoy one another’s presence in the great outdoors! From this spot, you can enjoy panoramic views of the river, go swimming, or make some new friends over an ice cold beverage or two.
Tips for Traveling to the Sandbar
For a perfect day at the May River Sandbar, all you really need is a boat, kayak, or jet ski. There are, however, a few tips that may help you make the most of your trip! Here are few things to keep in mind before heading out to the Sandbar.
Monitor the Tides
When planning your outing, be sure to check a tide chart. After all, there is no Sandbar at high tide! Also keep in mind that low tide lasts for a few hours. Once you arrive, you won’t be able to leave by boat until the tide comes back in. If you ask us, that just means more time to stay and play! If the tide is right, consider catching a famous Sandbar sunset.
Bring the Essentials
Before departing for the Sandbar, remember that there are no restroom facilities nearby. You’ll want to use the restroom and pack a bag of essentials beforehand! We recommend bringing along sunscreen, water, a towel, beach chairs, some snacks, and drinks.
Be Prepared to Have a Great Time
As relaxing as the May River is, the Sandbar is a place where people go to play music, enjoy games with one another, and socialize with people from all kinds of different backgrounds. Everyone is welcome at the Sandbar! Be sure to arrive with an open mind and a festive mood.
After a day full of sand, sun, and plenty of water activities at the May River Sandbar, you’ll want to come back to comfort and luxury. There’s no better place to return at the end of a fun day than The Promenade, where you’re just steps away from Bluffton’s best shopping, dining, and events (like the Bluffton Farmers Market). That’s why we welcome you to escape the ordinary at Old Town Bluffton Inn, the area’s only boutique hotel.
