Why You Need to Explore the Heyward House

Most welcome centers are bland buildings carrying typical travel pamphlets and information. But the Heyward House is not just any welcome center. One of eight antebellum homes left in Bluffton, South Carolina, it was built for a local plantation owner as a summer escape. The Heyward House is a great place to learn about Historic Bluffton and even offers a full tour of the area! Top Reasons to Visit the Heyward House

History

Built from simple timber back in 1841, the walls have over 170 years of American history dripping out of them. The house, designed by John J. Cole for his bride and built by slaves before the dawn of the Civil War, is named for the Heyward family who lived there from 1880’s until 1998. Among the inhabitants during that period was George Cuthbert, the grandson of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Virtually untouched by time, the site is still home to its original slave cabin and summer kitchen.
