What You Need to Know About The Church of the Cross
History of the Church
One of the biggest draws to The Church of the Cross in Old Town Bluffton is its history. Before the church itself was built, services on what was known as “The Bluff” of the May River first took place in the 1830s. Then a summer resort town, Bluffton was becoming the perfect stop between Savannah and Beaufort for inland planters. In 1842, a chapel was built near the current location of The Church of the Cross.
In the summer of 1854, the current Church of the Cross building was erected. Architect E. B. White described the structure as a “handsome cruciform Gothic building.” The building’s original latticed shutters, fanned arch windows, and exposed pine timbers have been beautifully maintained over the years! Despite enduring The Civil War, a deadly hurricane, and many other hardships, the church has stood the test of time. The iconic building was listed on The National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The Church of the Cross offers much more than lovingly restored architecture. This building also shelters a group of dedicated Christians that has grown even more rapidly than the town of Bluffton. This fellowship has a history of devotion to the community and welcomes new faces. If you’re religious, we recommend considering an event or service at the church.
